What is Asacol (Mesalamine Enteric Coated)?

Asacol is an oral medication that may be prescribed to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, a chronic disease of the large intestine that causes inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract.

The active ingredient in Asacol is an anti-inflammatory medication called Mesalamine, also known as 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory agent that stops the body from producing an inflammatory chemical in the intestines called prostaglandin.

The generic alternative of Asacol medication is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product. Asacol and Mesalamine may also be prescribed to prevent the recurrence of ulcerative colitis symptoms or to reduce the inflammation of the intestines caused by Crohn's disease.

What is Asacol used for?

Asacol and Mesalamine are used to treat the inflammatory bowel disease known as ulcerative colitis. These medications help reduce symptoms of ulcerative colitis including stomach pain, diarrhea, and blood in the stool.

While the exact cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown, an interaction of certain factors—including heredity, the immune system, and environmental—are thought to lead to it.

Ulcerative colitis typically starts between the ages of 15 and 30 (though it can affect people at any age).

People with ulcerative colitis are at an increased risk of certain complications including osteoporosis, poor growth and development in children and young adults, and bowel cancer.
