Viibryd - Vilazodone
(℞) Prescription required.
VIIBRYD (VILAZODONE)
Viibryd Description
Viibryd is a strong prescription drug to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). This very treatable mental illness is usually diagnosed by a medical professional if you experience at least five symptoms of depression lasting for at least two weeks. These may include losing interest in things that you once found pleasure in, feeling guilty or unworthy, sleeping too much or not enough, unexplained aches and pains, and expressing thoughts of harming yourself. These days there are fewer stigmas attached to having a mental illness, but it does not make seeking treatment any easier. There are still some individuals who mistakenly believe that it is not possible to function normally while taking antidepressants. Medicine has come a long way and depression is not a word you need to whisper any more. See your doctor and start taking Viibryd.
Vilazodone, the active ingredient in Viibryd is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that blocks a receptor in your brain that absorbs one of your brain chemicals called serotonin. This is a neurotransmitter that has an influence on your moods. Stopping the action of the reuptake (absorption) of serotonin allows more of it to circulate in your brain.
Viibryd works a little differently than many other SSRIs as it also partially blocks the activity of another Serotonin receptor (5-HT1A). The result is a desensitizing of this receptor so more serotonin is released. Any noticeable results of treatment with Viibryd could take several days, so do not be discouraged.
Conditions Treated by Viibryd
Viibryd is not a miracle drug that produces instant results. You should also enlist the help of a therapist that can assist you in managing your symptoms and promoting a more positive attitude. You can learn how to change your way of thinking and push the thoughts of feeling sad or worthless away and explore why you might think that way. Involve your family so you can learn how to relate better to your spouse and children. Stay active! Go for walks, learn a hobby, join a peer support group and learn how others that felt as you did managed to cope. Depression is an illness, not something you can ignore or put aside and hope you feel better soon.
Before You Take Viibryd
Ask your doctor whether it is safe to take Viibryd if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Advise your doctor of any other medical conditions or allergies you have and list any OTC or Rx drugs you are taking, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements. Your doctor can then determine if Viibryd is the right medication for you.
Warnings for Viibryd
Viibryd is not approved for children. Be certain your family is made aware that you may have thoughts of harming yourself while taking Viibryd. Inform your doctor and other mental health personnel that are involved in your care of any behavioral changes or worsening symptoms that occur during the first few months of your treatment.
